CRB Checks – Now Known as DBS Checks
If you’re searching for a CRB check, you’re probably referring to what is now called a DBS check. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) was replaced by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in 2012, but the purpose remains the same – to help organisations make safer recruitment decisions.
At Employment Tools by Aaron’s Department, we make it simple for employers to request DBS checks (formerly CRB checks) online, so you can hire with confidence and stay compliant.
Why Choose Employment Tools for CRB Checks?
With over 20 years of experience as an officially registered CRB Check Umbrella la Body, we are able to offer you:

What is a CRB Check?
A CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check is a criminal record check usually carried out by employers or organisations on potential and current staff. It is used to make informed recruitment decisions, and in some cases, to see whether the individual can work with vulnerable adults and children.
They can also be carried out on the likes of volunteers, foster carers and adoption applicants – anywhere where a criminal history could be important to know about.
The Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) merged with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) in 2012 to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

CRB FAQs
Are CRB checks still valid?
No, CRB checks were replaced by DBS checks in 2012. If you have an old CRB certificate, it’s still technically valid, but employers should request a new DBS check as it is very outdated.
Do volunteers need to pay for a CRB check?
No, volunteers who require a Standard or Enhanced CRB Check, and meet the government’s definition, only pay our admin fee.
How long does a CRB check take?
The majority of our CRB applications are completed within a few days, if not the same day. Times vary depending on the type of check, the information required, and which local police force are doing the checks.
Can I apply for my own CRB check?
You can apply for a Basic CRB check yourself. Standard and Enhanced checks must be requested by an employer or organisation.
